This book has easily become one of my favorite read alouds in 5th grade! The characters and situations are relatable and you find yourself becoming immersed in the characters' world. It highlights the joys and heartbreaks of being a preteen and adolescent. The message in this book is deep, complicated, and compelling. I think this is an important book to read before entering middle school. We all say things we don't mean, disagree with friends, lose friends, make new friends, but we never forget the words that cut deep. This book gives meaning to the importance of being kind and understanding that you can never take back what you say.
From the back of the book: In middle school, words aren't just words. They can be weapons. They can be gifts. The right words can win you friends or make you enemies. They can come back to haunt you. Sometimes they can change things forever.
